“IMPROVISE, ADAPT, OVERCOME”

What comes to your mind when you read that? Bunch of meme? Or an advice to some soft skill? What is Improve, what is Adapt, and how to Overcome?

Before that, Bonjour! This is my story about how I find valuable value behind memes.

Have you ever experience of enough to something. Feels like in comfort zone, feels high and mighty.

I have experience of that, while graduating in computer engineering in my vocational high school. I thought only armed with my knowledge from high school would be enough, but it was not.

As a fresh graduate, getting a job is fun, new colleagues, a new environment, and of course, being able to enjoy your own money. I experienced it. I was very happy with my first job, and had very high expectations, and felt that everything was enough. Unexpected co-workers, a fairly toxic environment, and high work pressure , I feel like, I’ve won (getting a job) but at what cost? (can’t adapt to the new environment).

Luckily, I found Generasi GIGIH 2.0, Which is an inclusive program because it is free of charge and open to students who are still active in the final semester as well as graduates from vocational schools and universities in Indonesia, not limited to majors or science-related technology.

What did I learn in Generasi GIGIH related to the title?

Through the Generasi GIGIH, I got new knowledge, I even realized that memes are like a short summary of what I got in the Generasi GIGIH, from which I got valuable values.

Because in Generasi GIGIH, besides learning about programming from the track we choose, we also get knowledge about soft skills lessons, and in the first week we discuss adaptability.

Soft Skill Class 1: Adaptability. (Source : Generasi GIGIH)

1. Why it is important to have adaptability?

“Adaptability in the workplace means being flexible and adaptable to success.”
“Adaptability is a soft skill that employers look for when hiring candidates.”

Administrators often have to deal with unusual situations where there is no clear instruction. They need to learn to use their own judgment and be confident in making difficult decisions. If you are a fast learner, it is because you know how to adapt. You can be more adaptable by trying new things and challenging problem-solving skills in different situations.

2. Getting used to changes

One of my friends talked about changes, that we need to change in form to adapt . Let take an example to Blackberry brand . They didn’t want to change, even it is their company’s branding, but in form to adapt, we need to change that didn’t suitable these day.

So, how do we get used to change?

1. Be clear of what we can and cant control

2. Step back and consider the long term effect

3. Think on you’ve successfully dealt with change in the past

4. Focus on what you know

3. Cultivating Growth Mindset

“Although people may differ in every which way in their initial talents and aptitudes, interests, or temperaments, everyone can change and grow through application and experience.”

— Carol Dweck, The New Psychology of Success

Trough that, I immediately do it, first to improve is, I improve how to professional at work, I change my fixed mindset to a growth mindset, I do cultivate it. The way I adapt is getting used to change. A change in the form of adapt. If I didn’t adapt, maybe I would be depressed, feel like there’s no comfort zone, and I wouldn’t overcome anything.

Just that simple.

How about you? What do you think?

So truth behind, “improvise, adapt, overcome” its just meme but key value that will change you life. Its used to be parody but what you get now?

Maybe that’s all I have to say. Good luck to everyone and I hope this short article is useful. Thank you for reading up to this point!

Adios!
